Committee to Save the West End is established.
1956
Founded by Joseph Lee Jr. and others, its office is located at 75 Staniford Street. Although Herbert Gans later faults “the inability of the West Enders to organize in their own behalf,” the group rents a storefront office and organizes meetings, attends public hearings, publishes pamphlets and leaflets, and goes to Washington and to court in an unsuccessful effort to stop the proposed West End urban renewal project.
